{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences near miss with Formula 1 track officials
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson stated he came dangerously close to a potentially deadly accident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two marshals darted across the track right in his path
The alarming incident happened on the third lap when marshals were observed on the circuit as Lawson was returning to the race following an premature pit stop to swap his compromised front wing
Driver's Immediate Reaction
Moments later, Racing Bulls driver Lawson spoke to his pit wall engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you witness that? I might have... taken their lives"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was seeing"
"I exited on a fresh hard compound tires, and then I arrived at Turn One and there were just two individuals dashing across the track"
"I came close to striking one of them, truthfully, it was incredibly risky"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Clearly there's been a miscommunication at some point but I've never encountered that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a ongoing race track marshals can be permitted to just sprint across the track in such a way. I have no idea why, I'm certain we'll get some sort of explanation, but this must never be repeated"
Formal Inquiry in Progress
The sport's regulatory authority, the global motorsport federation, is thoroughly reviewing the events
"Subsequent to a first corner event, race control was informed that wreckage remained on the track at the turning point of that curve" stated the FIA
"In the third rotation, safety personnel were notified and made ready to go onto the racing surface and remove the wreckage once the entire field had cleared the area"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had made a pit stop, the orders to send personnel were withdrawn and a safety warning flag was displayed in that section"
"Our inquiry continues what happened following that moment"
